Kiki turns thirteen and has to spend a year away from home before she can call herself a witch, the tradition her mother once followed. She picks a coastal town she has never seen, packs her cat Jiji into a basket, and arrives on her broomstick mid-storm with nowhere to stay. A bakery owner offers her a spare loft in exchange for help with deliveries, and Kiki turns the loft into the local courier service. The film is small: the customers she befriends, the slump she hits when her magic falters, and the painter girl on the cliff who teaches her what a creative block actually requires.
