After graduating from Tokyo Designers' College, he joined Telecom Animation Film. In 1982, he made his debut as a key animator on the Space Adventure Cobra film, and later also contributed in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind uncredited. He has since been wanted on many theatrical films, from Akira to most of Studio Ghibli's films. Due to this it has been a rarity to see him show up on TV productions.
He has been called the "Legendary Effects Giant" by Mahiro Maeda.
