Tohru Honda's mother died last year. Her father is long gone. Her grandfather is renovating the family house, so Tohru has been quietly living in a tent in the woods. The forest belongs to the Sohma family, and when the heads of the household find her there, they invite her to stay — partly because the alternative is leaving a sixteen-year-old in a tent, partly because their family has a curse to manage and a houseguest as observant as Tohru is going to figure it out. The Sohmas turn into the animals of the zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex.
