Hikaru Gero is the heir of one of five Poison Master families — assassins who have spent five centuries refining lethal compounds and the etiquette of using them. His family's matriarch has decided his younger sister will produce the next-generation heir, by arranged pregnancy if necessary. Hikaru's counter-plan: marry on his own terms and produce one with someone of his choice. The bride he ambushes during a contract is Mei Kinosaki, a celebrated marriage swindler the family wants him to kill. He instead asks for her professional help selecting an actual wife. She agrees, mostly because she is curious.
