I rate manga and anime on four elements: story, characters, visuals, and enjoyment.
My numerical ratings are the average of the individual scores I give each of those four elements. The score of a good story can be dragged down by subpar art; the score of a poorly written story can be boosted by beautiful art; overly stylized art can get a pass if it fits the story or pairs with very engaging characters.
10 - Peak of its genre, the rarest of the rare. It did everything well.
9 - Extremely good. Something about it elevates it above the good — breathtaking art, thrilling developments, endearing characters, fascinating story, or exquisitely expressed insight.
8 - Good. The story is interesting and well told, the art is clean and suits the story, the characters are realistic and compelling, the pacing is tight and the characters develop. It probably tugged on my heartstrings, or deeply engrossed me, or was simply gorgeous.
7 - The average side of good. It has flaws, but it's enjoyable. Good enough to be worth my while, but nothing special.
6 - Average, with the potential to be good, but it has too many flaws pulling it down. It probably bored me or frustrated me.
5 - Truly average. At this point, why bother? It's just a solid meh.
4 - The bad side of average. I didn't like it and it's full of flaws (or overwhelmed by mehness), but it had some sort of redeeming quality to keep me from hating it. It probably annoyed me.
3 - Bad. I dispassionately dislike it. I'm not even sure why I finished it — maybe I just couldn't look away from the train wreck? Maybe I thought that surely it had to get better? Give me my time back.
2 - It was bad. It is not worth my time or anyone else's. I actively dislike it and will rant to you about its flaws.
1 - Truly terrible. Egregious. A scourge upon the earth. I loathe it with a passion.
I'm fairly stingy with my ratings. However, I usually jump ship if a title is shaping up to be 5 or lower after three episodes or one volume; consequently, most of the titles I finish are on the high side of average.
The ratings of manga that I read and anime that I watched back in the early 2010s are probably outdated and no longer to scale with my current ratings.
