Some random stuff about me...
Satoshi Kon is my all time favourite director and Millennium Actress and Paprika are my all time favourite films and anime. My favourite shows are probably a tie between Space Dandy and Welcome to the NHK. Sci-Fi is (probably) my favourite genre. My favourite band is The Strokes!
I watch nearly all anime subbed, with the exclusion being certain (usually older and goofy) comedies.
I'm probably more of a film than show person. At least right now.
I write brief comments on the stuff in my list, however through importing them from MAL they've become sorta fucky. Oh and some are just sorta old.
Explanation on my scoring...
[10] Something I'm happy to call a masterpiece. A "I'm gonna pester all my friends who haven't seen this to watch it now anime" and "it's been 2 weeks and I still can't stop thinking and talking about it" anime. An ageless classic that will in my eyes stand forever as a crowning achievement of the director's. Since it's true that nothing can be "perfect" it should follow that "masterpiece" doesn't describe something perfect, just something very, very close; and this anime is something that I think is so well crafted and put together that it gets that close. All of these made me "feel" like few others, left a sizable impact on me, and are things I'll always be amazed by.
Examples: Millennium Actress, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Princess Mononoke, Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni
[9] An amazing, "uhh should I or should I not make room on my favourites list for this?" anime. I might be able to identify a few very minor problems some might have with it but I probably don't hold any myself. Overall this anime is still close to perfect for me in both part and enjoyment; just a bit less close than those above it (or lacking in that... "super special" feeling). These are all definitely still stuff that I'll forever be revisiting, and they'll always hold a special place in my heart. They're just about all favourites.
Examples: Hunter x Hunter, Cowboy Bebop, Mob Psycho 100, Time of Eve
[8] A great, "holy shit I really fukin liked that" anime. It has a few more (albeit small) issues than those scored above it for me, but it was still insanely enjoyable and well crafted; and will still stand-out very strong among the majority. It's more than solid, and very enjoyable. Anything here I definitely love.
Examples: Samurai Champloo, Your Name, My Hero Academia, KonoSuba
[7] A good, "well I really enjoyed that!" anime. I have or can see more issues with this one and/or maybe it has one larger failing in or at a certain part, but at the end of the day it was still definitely enjoyable, and the issues I had with it didn't manage to get in the way of that too much. It's good, and I would still happily recommend and rewatch it.
Examples: Death Parade, Youjo Senki, Overlord, Summer Wars
[6] A decent, "wow I wish certain things were different about this, but I like nevertheless" anime. This anime probably missed it's full potential for me and I might have had various larger problems with it, but there were still redeeming parts I found to it and I still found a fair bit of enjoyment in it. It doesn't quite deserve the title of "good" but it's not average or bad either; it's just "fine". It's still serviceable and worthwhile. It offers positive value. There's still a decent chance of me rewatching some of these.
Examples: Tokyo Ghoul, Afro Samurai, Goblin Slayer, The Promised Neverland
[5] A very average, "can't say I dislike this, but I don't especially like it either" anime. I found quite a few glaring issues with this anime and/or had some myself and so I probably didn't enjoy it too much either. This isn't to say it's all bad, but if I knew what I do now, chances are I wouldn't have originally watched it and instead spent my time elsewhere. Mediocrity is a waste. And very forgettable - I probably don't (or won't) remember much from these.
Examples: Sweat Punch, Reincarnated as a Slime, Mary and the Witch's Flower, No Game No Life
[4] Below average and disappointing. A "I don't despise this, but man did it fail for me" anime. The animes in this category are quite a mixed bag, some I may personally hate quite a bit but find it hard to ignore certain decent qualities of, and others (the majority I think) I don't hate but just find too many failings in their execution. However they are all shows that by the end of I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. Collectively my thoughts and feelings lean to the negative.
Examples: Tokyo Ghoul √A, Halo Legends, B: The Beginning, Kara no Kyoukai
[3] Very bad territory. An anime I can confidently say that I really did not like much. There's still SOME features to these animes that prop them up a bit that save them from being lower; they still might have offered something that I might have somewhat liked... However they're still huge regrets of mine that I wish I had never watched. They're more than just disappointing, and I probably found most of my time with them to be really grating.
Examples: Banana Fish, Appleseed, Sirius the Jaeger, Empire of Corpses
[2] Terrible. Anime that are just a hair above the absolute worst for me. Can't quite say that these offered nothing or had absolutely nothing good about them, but I can say that what they had to offer made little to no difference in saving them from being something terrible, extremely forgettable and/or something absolutely I hate. These are anime I definitely had a hard time not getting a bit toxic over soon after watching with the internal pain they caused me.
Examples: Angolmois, Sword Art Online, Ao no 6-gou, Final Fantasy: Advent Children
[1] Offered absolutely nothing for me. Probably made me hate myself for being a completionist. Insultingly terrible. Made me question just about everything about the staff. Well past laughably bad territory.
Examples: Shichisei no Subaru, Angels of Death, Aguu: Tensai Ningyou, Utsu Musume Sayori
My favourite TV anime, or: 10 shows I want to sell you on...
Welcome to the N.H.K. [10/10]
// Opening / Track / Track //
Not perfect by any stretch, but a masterpiece all the same. This is about both as harshly and as hilariously real as a show could ever get. See: my full review
Space Dandy [10/10]
// Opening / ED / Funny Dandy / Pure Dandy //
Space Dandy is bizarre. Space Dandy is beautiful. Space Dandy is stupid. Space Dandy is dandy. Space Dandy is perfect. My joint favourite show. Visually perfect with so many amazingly creative, unforgettable episodes and journeys - episodics couldn't get better.
Hunter x Hunter 2011 [9/10]
// Opening / <3 Scene / Track / Track //
This show is the epitome of an epic adventure, it'll make you feel everything and it'll hook you like no other. World-building perfected with an insanely diverse and memorable range of characters and arcs, with a perfect main duo to fall in love with and watch develop - and do they develop!
Megalo Box 2 [10/10]
// Cool Azz Opening / Scene / Track / Perfect Review //
An incredibly rare achievement - a sequel no one really asked for that not only develops and expands perfectly from the first, but elevates what was already a great show into a masterpiece. I couldn't gush about this feat enough. Thoughtful, emotional, and something entirely different for the genre and from the first season. A perfect sequel in every single possible way - even if you somehow fully hated the first season I'd still recommend it.
FLCL [9/10]
// Most foolycooly Scene / Track / Track / Track //
Still unsure where to put this crazy little one. It's so short yet so absolutely jam-packed with flair, depth and energy. The peaks in this roar. It perfectly encapsulates the confusing, brash, bittersweet, insecure, exciting, annoying, whirlwind nature of growing up... - with all the nostalgia of reminiscing (and having a The Pillows OST). This is one of the special forms of media that grows with you the more you think on it, and the more you come back to it. It's lightning in a bottle. If you haven't watched it - you're missing out on something that hasn't been achieved in quite the same way since or before.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood [10/10]
// GOAT Opening / Scene / Track //
The Shonen formula perfected. No show has ever left me with bigger post-show-blues than this - it took way too long for that hole to go. A journey from start to finish, that gets you so invested and attached to the characters and their stories that you don't quite know what to do with yourself when they're over. If you haven't experienced this classic you're really missing out.
Wolf's Rain [9/10]
// Amazing Trailer / Scene / Track / Track //
This show is going to sink its teeth into you and leave a mark. One of the most emotive and unforgettable shows I've seen - passionate, heartfelt, thematically deep and rich with lingering melancholy. It's a rough, imperfect but beautiful gem loud with amazing drama, action and soundtrack, but made truly special by it's quieter moments.
Mob Psycho 100 [9/10]
// Opening / Scene / Track / They Got Their Own Group //
An amazingly well-written, unbelievably well-produced emotional story that won't stop growing on you right till the end, full of sick action, crazy heartfelt climaxes, and an entire main cast worth of lovable characters. There's no greater example of a studio going above and beyond for a story adaptation than this - and it doesn't take long to understand why they did.
Time of Eve [10/10]
// Trailer / Track / Episode 1 on YT //
A brilliant, concise, and highly entertaining one-of-a-kind Sci-Fi short series about androids and humanity's possible co-existence. Set in a café. With super clever directing and captivating sound design. Just give the first episode a quick go - it's only 15 short minutes, and there's nothing else quite like this... ;)
Golden Boy [9/10]
// Gloriously Groovy 90's Opening / Funny Scene / Funny Scene / Track / Episode 1-6 on YT //
The ideal Ecchi in so many ways, and what I compare any Ecchi to. I'm not a big Ecchi fan but this is so subversively wholesome and motivational. And so unbelievably and gloriously 90's... With one of the most gloriously cheesy and over-the-top English dubs, and the most down-horrendous protag. They just don't make 'em like this anymore...
