Scoring
90+
Either a genuinely agreeable masterpiece, or I'm totally fanboying. Pick your poison.
80-89
Totally worth watching for most audiences. I like to think I'm pretty objective about quality when a show lands in this area, as the majority of highest rated mainstream shows should fall somewhere in here. Also, some shows that I really, really love that have noticeable flaws end up in this range.
70-79
These shows lack something crucial, but are still worth the hours of watching commitment for passionate consumers. Many mainstream shows end up here, especially shounen anime that I aged out of ten years before they were even adapted.
60-69
I believe the title is worth viewing for people favoring the particular genres the show represents (comedy, drama, action, horror, etc.) However, there are some fatal flaws that are not worth the attention of the majority of consumers.
50-59
Generally a disappointing show, lacking too much of any particular aspect (story, character, audio, animation, etc.) and is completely okay to ignore. Fair enough, some shows here were personally unpleasant to me and definitely are worth a shot for folks who have highly opposing tastes to mine, but again - I try really hard to be objective as my scores lower, so I'd say few and far between.
40-18
Genuinely unpleasant, pretty much for everyone. Or they might have an awesome premise (like El Hazard or Record of the Lodoss War) but overridden with dreadfully boring exposition, horrendous animation, cheesy or recycled music, and proving to exist simply to make dolla billz for studios.
18
There is one anime with this score, and it ruined a series for me.
Less than 18
Probably Boku no Pico, but I am never ever in a galactic year watching that so yeah...not on my list. ^□^
Before considering watching any show on my list do the following:
- Read some of my reviews. My tastes are not interesting for younger groups today, so if you like what I write you'll probably see why I like the shows I do.
- I went through a long hopeless romantic phase up through my mid-20s, so a lot of my highest scoring anime tend to be gushy. If this isn't your type of material pay attention to shows without labels of romance or drama.
- Is music in an anime important to you? If not, deduct at least 15 points from this score and compare.
