It is 2138 and Yggdrasil — the longest-running VR MMO ever launched — is being shut down at midnight on its anniversary. The wizard Momonga, leader of the elite guild Ainz Ooal Gown, refuses to log out and stays inside as the servers close. He is not logged out. The game world has become a real continent. The NPCs his guild built — the succubus Albedo, the demon Demiurge, the elf battle maids, the lich Cocytus — wake up with personalities of their own and the loyalty to Momonga that he wrote into their files. The series is Momonga's slow takeover of the rest of the world.
