After several seasons-worth of looping in the Sanctuary trial, Subaru has finally understood the broader rules of his return-by-death ability and the Witches of Sin who set them. The second cour of season two picks up immediately afterward, with Subaru and Otto trying to keep the Roswaal household together as the Sanctuary's barrier collapses, the surrounding villages get attacked by the cult, and Garfiel and Frederica's family history reaches the conversation they have been postponing for a hundred years.
